Polos

 Polos is a term used in various types of shirt accessories that are worn on the upper portion of the body to protect the chest and the hands. There are various definitions of this term polos and one of the definition according to Americans is that polos is a woolen sweater that has close fitting and high neck collars. These polos are type of unisex garments and can be used by both sexes.

These polos garments were introduced in 1890 and were normally used by the soccer players and by the polo players. It is considered that polos term has originated from the game of polo. Later on in 1895 these polos garments were very popular and also used by the golf players and the hockey players. During 20 th century the polos were renamed as polo neck garments and still the term is continuing.

Now days these polos garments are used widely as work wear, casual wear, women wear and as the feminist wear.

• Polos as work wear

As the polos garments gained wide popularity from sport wear later on it was introduced, as work wear also at the end of the 20 th century. The Royal Navy was the first to adopt the polo garment as a work wear uniform for their sailors and due to this it has got the status of unisex garment. This was the reason that many people started wearing the polo neck shirts and the sweaters during their day activities.

• Polos as casual wear

The polos were introduces as a casual wear by Mr. Noel Coward in the year 1920.As these polos were designed in various shapes and colors people especially men accepted it as a casual wear and later on the feminists made this garment as a unisex garment and were used by the women second half of the century. The Americans also accepted this as a fashion trend in 20 th century and considered it as dress without tie.

• Polos as women’s wear

As the Americans accepted polos garments, the rest of the world followed the American fashion and especially the teenage girls were the leaders in using the polos as it suited well to their body figures. Later on the Hollywood film industry introduced the use of polos in their movies and this was the beginning of the polos as a women wear.

These polos were considered as grooming and tidiness form attire by the students in and around 1950.

Later on it spread to Britain and other parts of the European countries. But at the same time the France was not in favor of polos to accept it as the latest trend in fashion.

The white polo neck shirts and sweater are the most common polos that are used all over the world now days. It is also considered as a sexiest garment that exhibits the natural body shapes of the ladies in fashion arena. The models commonly wear it during the fashion parades and catwalks on the ramps.
